Vote for Wynn! (and Cookies)
September 24, 2024 / School
The day I decided to run for Student Council President, I knew it wouldn’t be easy. But with a great support team (my parents), creative campaigning, and a lot of passion, I managed to pull off a memorable win. I’m excited to share the journey with you and reflect on what it took to lead a campaign, gain support, and come out victorious. It all started when I realized that as student council president, I could make a real impact on our school. I wanted to be the voice of my peers, someone who could bring fresh ideas to the table and create a positive atmosphere for everyone. And that’s when the decision became clear — I was going to run. I’d already been involved in school activities and had worked as editor of our school newspaper, but this was a whole new challenge. I wanted to bring energy, creativity, and leadership to our school, and I knew I could do it. But first, I had to get the votes.
With my slogan “Vote for Wynn!” in mind, the campaign planning began. I wanted a campaign that would be fun, creative, and memorable. So naturally, I went with a theme inspired by one of my favorite characters — Napoleon Dynamite. The simplicity of the “Vote for Pedro” shirt in the movie sparked the idea for my own take: “Vote for Wynn!”
Thinking of the now-iconic “Vote for Pedro” shirt, I hit the campaign trail. The plan was to plaster my slogan on cookies. Yes, cookies. But more on that later. The campaign design wasn’t just about being catchy; it was about showing my classmates and teachers that I was approachable, relatable, and ready to represent them. Of course, running for president means more than just cookies and a catchy slogan. I wanted to let my fellow students know exactly why they should vote for me.
To really stand out, I took the opportunity during a school-wide meeting to speak directly to my peers about my vision and the changes I wanted to bring. And honestly, being myself was my best strategy. I didn’t try to be something I wasn’t. I stayed true to my values, my sense of humor, and my belief that we could make the school a better place together.
What’s a campaign without a little extra sweetness? To make things even more memorable, I teamed up with my parents to bake Vote for Wynn cookies, wrapped up with custom labels featuring my campaign slogan. It was the perfect mix of fun and creativity. Each cookie was a reminder of who I was and what I stood for — someone who would make our school a place where students felt heard, cared for, and, of course, well-fed!
I wasn’t just relying on baked goods to win votes. I spent time speaking with my teachers, attending meetings, and participating in school events to make sure everyone knew I cared. Running for president gave me a unique platform to amplify my voice, and I wasn’t going to waste it.
When the day finally arrived, there was a mix of excitement and nerves. I had worked hard, and now it was time to see if all my efforts would pay off. As the ballots were totaled throughout the day, I felt a growing sense of pride. No matter the outcome, I knew we’d run a campaign I could be proud of. Then the results were announced: I won!
Winning the election was an incredible feeling, but more than that, it was a testament to the power of authenticity and creativity. I was grateful for the support, and I knew that this was just the beginning of an exciting journey as student council president.
Running for student council president was a challenge, but it was also a lot of fun. From the “Vote for Wynn!” cookies to the Napoleon Dynamite-inspired campaign, it was a unique experience that taught me a lot about leadership and being true to yourself. I can’t wait to see what the student council accomplishes together this year, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve as president.
